Mother's Day
May. 10th, 2009 03:43 pmIt's days like this that I realise just how bloody dysfunctional my upbringing really was.
We're over visiting Wuff's parents for dinner. Wuff and his dad have gone to the park (I have some kind of horrible stomach bug, so I'm staying near the bathroom, but you didn't need to know that, did you?), leaving me and his mum to chat. Naturally, we start talking about families. Wuff's mum is one of those incredibly active, frighteningly capable women who intimidate the hell out of me. She's always up on whatever her family is doing, seems able to handle anything that comes her way and is just generally, well, efficient.
Meanwhile, my mother sounds 20 years older than her real age, sleeps for over 24 hours at a time and appears to be getting more and more frail. Of course, I found this out when I rang, and only then by bullying the info out of her. That's pretty much par for the course these days - my phone calls are equal parts pep talk and bullying. All of which, of course, makes it so much more surreal trying to talk to Wuff's mum. I don't have a mother-daughter relationship of any sort to model when interacting with her, so I flannel wildly and end up in this weird kind of nervous exhaustion that usually sees me falling asleep on the drive home.
Meh. Enough of that. Happy stuff.
Wuff and the kids let me sleep in this morning, which was wonderful (since my sleep's been pretty screwed up lately). Meglet and Wuff went off to karate, while Lilygirl stayed in the loungeroom reading and drawing, until I woke up - whereupon she brought me in some little presents she'd got at a school stall (including a pretty compact mirror). Meglet's presents included chocolate, and the three of them brought me some lovely flowers. I keep telling Wuff not to buy Mother's Day presents, but he gave me a new Wire in the Blood DVD, so I can't really complain, now can I?
Happy Mother's Day to all my flist who are Mums of any shape or sort (that includes you,
